Grounding is boring. It is also the difference between a safe station and a fire hazard. Here is the grounding guide every new operator needs.
Three Types of Grounding
| Type | Purpose | How |

| RF Ground | Antenna efficiency | Radial wires or counterpoise at antenna |
| Electrical Safety Ground | Prevent shock | Connect equipment to house ground |
| Lightning Ground | Protect from strikes | Ground rod + heavy wire from antenna mast |
Minimum Grounding Checklist
- Antenna mast bonded to 8-foot ground rod
- Lightning arrestor at cable entry point
- Arrestor bonded to electrical ground
- All equipment connected to a common ground bus
Portable Grounding
For field operations, grounding is simpler: use the radio as-is with its battery (no ground needed for handhelds), or run a counterpoise wire for portable antennas.
