What is Air Band?

Air band is the VHF radio spectrum used for civil aviation communication, spanning 108 to 136 MHz. Unlike most ham radio frequencies that use FM modulation, air band uses AM (Amplitude Modulation). This is why you need a radio that specifically supports AM reception in this range.

How to Listen

  1. Program local airport frequencies. Find them on AirNav.com or RadioReference.com.
  2. Switch to AM mode. On the QUANSHENG UV-K1(8), air band AM is automatic when tuned to 108-136 MHz.
  3. Get higher. Air band signals travel line-of-sight. Higher elevation = more range.
  4. Use a better antenna. The stock antenna works but a dedicated air band antenna improves reception.

Is It Legal?

Yes, listening is 100% legal. Transmitting on air band frequencies is strictly prohibited unless you are a licensed pilot or air traffic controller. Your radio will not transmit on these frequencies — it is receive-only in this band.
