Programming a ham radio through the keypad takes hours and is error-prone. CHIRP is free software that lets you program hundreds of channels in minutes. Here is exactly how to use it.
What is CHIRP?
CHIRP (CHIRP Ham Radio Programming) is free, open-source software that works with over 100 radio models including QUANSHENG UV-K1(8), UV-K5, Baofeng UV-5R, and most popular handhelds. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Step 1: Install CHIRP
- Go to chirpmyradio.com
- Download the version for your operating system
- Install and launch
Step 2: Connect Your Radio
- Plug the USB programming cable into your computer
- Turn on your radio (volume at 50%)
- In CHIRP: Radio → Download From Radio
- Select your port and radio model (QUANSHENG UV-K1 is in the list)
Step 3: Add Channels
- Click a blank row in the channel table
- Enter Frequency, Name, Tone Mode (for repeaters: TSQL + CTCSS)
- For repeaters: set Duplex (+ or -) and Offset (0.6 MHz for 2m)
- Repeat for all your channels
Step 4: Upload to Radio
- Radio → Upload To Radio
- Wait for the progress bar — do not unplug
- Your channels are now on the radio
