One of the most common questions new ham operators ask is: "How far can this radio talk?" The answer is not simple — it depends on many factors. Here is a complete breakdown.

What Limits Your Range?

  • Line of sight: VHF and UHF signals travel in straight lines. The curvature of the Earth blocks them after about 4-5 miles at ground level. Get higher, get further.
  • Obstacles: Buildings, hills, and trees absorb and reflect radio waves. Urban environments cut range significantly.
  • Antenna: The stock antenna on most handhelds is a compromise. Upgrading to a longer antenna like the Nagoya NA-771 can add 30-50% more range.
