When You Cannot See or Hear Your Partner
Multi-pitch climbing means you are often out of sight and out of earshot from your partner. Shouting into the wind does not work. Ham radio does. Here is the climber radio setup.
Why Radio Beats Shouting
- Out of sight: Your partner is 150 feet above you around a roof — you cannot see or hear them
- Wind noise: Ridgeline winds make shouting impossible
- Critical commands: "Off belay" and "Climbing" must be heard clearly — miscommunication can be dangerous
- Emergency: If something goes wrong, call for help instantly
Climbing Radio Setup

Climbing Protocol
- Turn on radio before starting the route
- Agree on a simplex frequency (146.580 works well)
- Climber calls "Climbing" and "Off belay" by radio
- Belayer responds — confirmation is critical
