Every ham radio operator eventually asks: should I use UHF or VHF? The answer depends on where you are, what you are doing, and how far you need to reach. Here is a simple guide.

- Long-distance simplex: VHF can reach 10-15 miles ground-to-ground in flat areas.
When to Use UHF (70-Centimeter)
- Urban environments: UHF penetrates concrete and steel better than VHF.
- Inside buildings: Shopping malls, convention centers, office buildings.
- Smaller antennas: Compact radios and shorter antennas work great on UHF.
- Repeaters: Many urban repeaters are on UHF because of building penetration.
